A win-win alternative

The Kings Reserve and Thebarton Oval Precinct offers a great opportunity for high quality outcomes for all stakeholders. Considered planning and a longer term vision can unlock the true potential of this valuable community land.

First and foremost, it must be recognised that any development on community land should primarily be for the benefit of the community.

There are clear and tangible benefits to a development that retains the mature tree canopy on Kings Reserve and provides an equitable space that is dedicated for community use.

Conversely, a second oval on Kings Reserve serves only the Adelaide Football Club while taking so much from the community.

A better outcome and a potential win-win alternative might consider the following:

Western half of 2018 masterplan retained:

  • a precinct level park

  • all mature trees

  • shaded picnic & bbq areas

  • walking and cycling paths

Main oval can be sized to allow both Adelaide Oval and MCG line markings if required

Existing grassed area on Kings Reserve can be used as a temporary additional training space during the South Road upgrade

  • up to 10,000m2 available at outset

  • nearly twice the area of Port Adelaide planned second training space

  • there is room fo a senior size soccer pitch

Room to expand additional training space at completion of T2D Project.

  • There is room for two senior size soccer pitches

  • Existing community club soccer can continue on Kings Reserve

The benefits include:

  • All mature eucalyptus trees on the western half of Kings Reserve can be retained and the majority of the 2018 Kings Reserve Masterplan can be delivered.

  • Instant shade and character solidifying and grounding the new with the old.

  • A ‘Precinct Level Park’ with substantial picnic, playground and youth activity areas. The precinct becomes a destination for all, bringing in and uniting the community around a great club.

  • Increased diversity of offerings and broad community appeal strengthening the Crows brand and reach.

  • Character and nature filled areas for families and friends to gather before and after games.

  • Increased 24/7 accessibility and connectivity through the precinct

  • A greater buffer between existing residential properties and training facilities.

  • The Crows demonstrate that they truly want to be and are committed to being a good neighbour.
